Course Overview

The Tide School Sea Swim Course is a complete introduction to safe sea swimming, taught in three one-hour sessions.

First, you’ll discover how your body reacts to cold water and learn how to manage the risks of shock, afterdrop, and hypothermia through practical drills and safe rewarming.

Next, you’ll explore Sea Sense — how tides, waves, winds, and rip currents affect swimmers, and how to recognise and respond to them.

Finally, you’ll focus on Swim Technique in real conditions: how to enter and exit safely, adapt your stroke and breathing for chop and surf, and stay oriented in moving water.

Together, these sessions give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to swim safely and enjoyably in the sea — in any season, at any location.

Session 1 : Physiology

In the first session you’ll learn how the body reacts to cold water, from the first gasp of cold water shock to the hidden risk of afterdrop. Through controlled entry, breathing drills, and safe rewarming practice, you’ll learn how to manage your body in the sea and prevent hypothermia.

Session 2 : Sea Sense

This session teaches you how to read the sea and make safe choices. You’ll learn how tides, waves, streams, and rip currents affect swimmers, practise spotting dangers from shore and in the water, and discover how to plan safe swim windows that work with the elements rather than against them.

Session 3 : Technique

The final session focuses on building safe and confident swimming skills in real sea conditions. You’ll practise controlled entries and exits through waves, adapt your stroke and breathing for chop and currents, and use sighting to stay oriented — giving you the confidence to swim calmly and in control.
